MMH Hosts Youth Health Camp – WRBI Radio

RIPLEY COUNTY, INDIANA, July 30, 2025 – Genesis: Pathways to Success continued A Summer of
STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) with Camp Scrubs and
Stethoscopes hosted at Margaret Mary Health. Over the course of three days, 16 students were introduced
to jobs within the medical field and the day-to-day tasks of those professions.

To kick off camp, students received a tour of Margaret Mary Hospital, introducing them to every aspect
of healthcare Margaret Mary offers. They even got a tour of the inside of the ambulance. Whether it be
radiology or lab, students got the opportunity to see first-hand the variety of pathways within the
healthcare field. Throughout camp, students got to meet different doctors and nurses within these careers
and gain deeper insight into their area of expertise.

Not only did students meet the professionals, but they participated in multiple hands-on activities for a
real life experience. Students were able to create their own IV bag using dyed water to replicate different
medications based on a scenario. With this, they learned in-depth details on anesthesia and gained an
understanding of the correct way it should be used. They learned how to take vitals consisting of blood
pressure, temperature, and breath rate. Students got the opportunity to learn the correct usage of crutches
and lifting machines. Within their different rotations, students enjoyed learning how to swaddle a baby
and change their diapers!

“Anesthesia was so cool and nerve wracking to think about what could happen if you messed up. It was
my favorite section we talked about,” said Madison Pollard.

Speech pathology presented students with different food textures to represent different diets for patients
who suffer with throat problems. Students got to try each food and understand why the consistency and
texture applied to different patients. Students learned the dangers of smoking and completed an activity
that presented what popcorn lungs felt like.

Furthermore, students gained knowledge on CPR! Practicing on dummies, students learned the ratio of
compressions to breaths, the rate of compressions per minute, and the depth of compressions on both
adults and babies. Not only did students learn the emergency responses of healthcare professionals, they
also gained a valuable skill that can be applied in their day to day lives.

Camp Scrubs and Stethoscopes also included fun, energetic activities. Students participated in a series of
relay races and pictionary games! Combined with the instructional activities, these relays allowed the
campers to apply the crucial skills they learned throughout camp through enjoyable activities.

“My favorite part of camp was the IVs. It was neat to see all the different steps on how to create them.
There wasn’t anything I didn’t enjoy about camp,” said Jenna Pollard.

Genesis: Pathways to Success would like to thank Margaret Mary Health for graciously partnering with
